I might be over-optimistic but I rate my physical
well-being, spiritual well-being and psychological well-being all at 7. I feel well balanced but it’s all based on
what I already know. I recognize that as
I learn I see my short falls but through each class I begin to work on those
areas. I don’t feel I could ever be
higher than a 7 in any area. After all,
the goal is to keep them in balance but keep learning and growing.
My physical is going well but my goal is to reach a point
where it’s routine and nothing gets in the way of my workout. I listen to my body frequently…all day in
fact. I pay attention to nourishment.
My spiritual is attended to daily. Through prayer and peaceful reflection I feel
a peace that I share with others.
My psychological well-being is worked on daily also. I’m content with my achievements in business
and relationships. I work on my
self-esteem and meaning consistently. My
world is an active playground and I do believe that without growth we die. I’m working on my personal development during
every lap.
My goals for all three areas include establishing a routine
for my fitness sessions, finding the meditation that works for me and working
on human flourishing. These are exciting
projects and I’m thrilled about deepening my wellness and purpose in life. My exercise and meditation sessions must be a
consistent 3 days/week. The human
flourishing will be a daily project as I work on this class. It helps to share what I learn with my
husband and discuss strengths and weaknesses as his feedback is well
accepted.
Karen, it's important for us all to have some sort of plan to wellness. Optimum wellness is what most of are are trying to achieve. Even people with poor habits, obesity, high cholesterol, and depression are all looking to achieve wellness. It may seem sometimes that they are going in the wrong direction whether it be by drug usage, drinking, or just a bad attitude. Through these outlets a person is looking to heal themselves of the pain they feel eating sometimes soothes a person who is depressed, drugs may make someone forget what has happened, etc. This is all a search for wellness but, it's done in the wrong way. I beleive that the most important things for us all to learn is good habits on how to cope with what is not right within. Coping is going to make all the difference in our lives. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest bad habit is having "beverages" in the evening with my husband. We've made a habit out of having beers or wine and the calories add up with no nutrition. That's at the top of the unhealthy habits list. In fact, that's about the only unhealthy habit I have. Now that I've just made that public I'll be forced to do something about it!
DeleteI love that now you made this public...lol! My fiance and I have a hard time with sugar, well he does I have done a good job of cutting a lot of it out of my diet. I am not a huge drinker, the only thing that gets me is coke and chocolate. Chocolate is hard to give up for me, I have zero willpower against it, like in the negatives. I'll eat it if my stomach hurts!
DeleteOk Karen and Nicole,
ReplyDeleteDon't give up so much of what is making you happy! Look at it differently. I love beer, so I had to learn what was good about it. My husband doesn't drink at all so I had to come up with evidence of why I needed to drink one beer each evening (actually it's only some nights) and I came up with huge benefits. Beer is the largest food source for something called "solinum" or something close. It is an ingredient that is essential for our bones. It does similar things to calcium and it is very important. Also, it is stated in many health journals now that one beer or one glass of wine a night is beneficial for women's health. It helps you relax and cuts stress. Men get to have two :O)
Now on to chocolate. My husband is diabetic as well was my mother and grandmother. I had to uncover things that he could have to help with his sugar cravings. Chocolate is recommended by the American Diabetes Foundation. The darker the better. It is full of anti-oxidants. You can find dark chocolate bars up to about 80% cocoa which really makes them full of vitamins, but as my daughter puts it, "it taste like sweet mud" :O) You don't have to go that high. Even milk chocolate is good for you, it's just that when it is mixed with sugar, you have to deal with that. Sugar will not show that the bar consists of any extra fat content, but sugar turns to fat inside of us. Just try normal dark chocolate and work your way up to bars that report they are 30% or higher. With so much diabetes in my family and I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) I have to really limit my daughter's sugar intake. She has already fainted and shown other signs of low blood sugar. I gave her a big dark chocolate bar of 70% and told her she could eat as much of it as she wanted. With delight she grabbed it and started on it. After her first bite and discovering it tasted different, I explained the difference. She said it tastes like mud, but if it's chocolate and I'm allowed to eat it, I'm happy. Her father is not as easy. He's a big baby. We have to go much lower percentage. There are fantastic sugar free chocolates to. All you have to do is look for them. We buy bags of them at Walmart.
Oh, I forgot the wine. Wine is fantastic for you as long as you don't become a "wino" :O)
I never have chocolate cravings but my husband eats Gevalia dark chips. We ration them to my grandaughter who thinks it's so funny to have her litte shot cup of them. I just started Black Cohosh for night sweats and I may be on to something here. I only woke to one last night. That's way down. We'll see how tonight goes. I was hoping you had a miracle cure for me!
ReplyDeleteI agree on you because we have to establish mental exercises to maintain our brain healthy all time, we can make a weekly schedule about how many days a week I'm going to spa, or hear the animals in the forest, church, front of the beach by the night looking the stars, etc... some activities like those.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the fact that you said that we must all keep balance, but I also think that limitation is all in the mind. You do have the power to make the score goes higher if you choose to, because only you have the power to do so. Our mind is an unlimited harvest, it is up to us to explore the amount we want to.
Karen,
ReplyDeleteYour goals are realistic and your plan for accomplishing them is a good one. Never underestimate what you can do with the right plan. Maintaining a balance is difficult but it can be done. Set your goals higher in increasing the number of your well-being scale. Your health can alwys be improved. I am living proof of that. I made a very difficult decision back in February to have gastric bypass surgery. Almost four months later, I have lost a total of 87 pounds so far and I am looking forward to getting to my goal. The good news is that I am in better health than I have been in many years. I was an insulin dependent diabetic and I am happy to say that I no longer take any insulin and I have been taken off of all my blood pressure meds. Imagine my thrill today when I tried on a size 16 and it fit!!! I was in a size 28-30 prior to surgery. Continue to work towards your goals and you will be amazed how good you will feel. My husband of 39 years is and always has been my sounding board. He helps me to stay grounded and I try and do the same for him. He doesn't have the patience with other people the way that I do. I try to find a positive thing in all people and he struggles with that one. I will admit that I haven't yet been able to get him to go to church with me. I know he is a beleiver, but he is very private and prefers not to share it with others. The only thing that I can do at this point is pray for him and try and be a witness to him by showing him how God is working in my life.

ReplyDeleteI think that you have a well thought out plan, and it sounds like you have already started with it. I know you can do it. For years I stressed about gaining weight if I quit smoking, and that nothing would work to help me quit. Then one day I just quit buying them and I haven't looked back, I can't say that I haven't wanted one at stressful times but I simply do and think positive thoughts about how I am on my way to complete wellness. I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck with everything!
I smoked for 13 years and 26 years ago I had a hangover for 2 days and decided to avoid the next cigarette at all costs. It worked for me! I avoided that next one for all this time, of course I haven't craved one for 25 of that, but I'm so thankful for the health I have because of moving on from it. Thank you Jesus! At the cost of them these days who can afford to smoke. Let's be healthy and grow in Integral Health!
