Unit 7: Aesclepius & Leading With Experience

Meeting Aesclepius

I really like this meditation and I’m able to cruise right through it quickly while finding a peace.  I have wished I could hang out with my “wise man” mentor all day and through this exercise I can.  I have noticed that in trying to practice this meditation I haven’t been in prayer as much.  Perhaps I need to replace my mentor with a vision of Jesus sitting casually with me since he is anyway.  This way I can read his words in print and hear him saying them during the meditation session.

"One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" (Dacher, 2006).

One definitely cannot lead another in the same way as a leader who has experience in the path.  Faking it only goes so far.  A practitioner may know the general direction but unless there is continuing education they will quickly fall behind or limit themselves to a life of shallow general practice.  This limited education does work for some practitioners but as the public becomes more aware of the many approaches to wellness I feel it’s very important for the practitioner to keep up or risk lack of credibility. Relating also applies to things that haven’t worked for us.  “I can relate, it didn’t work for me but it has for many.” I would respect a doctor more for being honest.  Even in our personal life we should continuously educate ourselves in not only new theories but in checking the truth in the old as to weed out wives tales and misguided advertisements.

  1. Hi Karen,

I liked what you said about picturing Jesus sitting casually with you. What a great visualization! It sounds peaceful. From your posts and reading your work I can feel a peace in you that you must get with your Faith. Thank you for the kind words and inspiration you leave me as I struggle with looking for a job. Loving kindness really does work!

  2. Karen, I really enjoyed your post and can agree with your thoughts on misguiding someone in the wrong direction and not sharing experiences because they didn't work for you. I feel that people are more educated than before and they are able to investigate what is going on with themselves and so when they do finally see a nurse or doctor they are looking for answers to validate what they are feeling and what they have read to be true. Sometimes these doctors make excuses for lack of knowledge only, making them look less credible and in return the patients do not like to return to them. I personally have had these problem in where I have changed doctors because they were not right for me.

  3. Hi Karen

I think it really is more beneficial to another when the person who is leading them, helping them or healing them has had some sort of experience themselves in the area in which it makes the process so much more fullfilling for both parties. But I beleive the reality is we have alot of people practicing things in which they themselves havent experienced, I believe at this point extensive education comes into play.

  4. Hi Karen I really enjoyed the statement of you exchanging the mentor with Jesus himself. That was great. I have noticed that through this class and these practices we are doing my devotion/relationship with Christ has grown. He is my source of comfort and peace and taking the time to let go of the struggles we face daily gives me a special time to soak in His presence. Pam12

    1. It's interesting that in our day to day life it's rare to have people talking about faith but in this class there is so much disclosure about our personal practices of prayer and devotion. I have been pleasantly surprised to see how many faith based classmates are sharing their personal experiences. Maybe because we are putting it in writing or because we are not in an open classroom. It has been a welcomed experience for me.

  5. I believe also believe that a doctor should be open and honest about their experiences with something. If they tried something and it did not work maybe they could have a few people listed that did have something positive to say. It really rely on Jesus for my comfort and to put me at ease through tough times.

  6. Karen,
You are so right and there are many "fakes" out there who only want your money. We ourselves must be educated in any new technique or practice so as to not get duped by these people. I have left doctors who I did not feel were being honest with me and did not really have my best interests at heart. My only true healer and believer is God. He is my salvation and my comfort in times of need. He knows exactly what I need even before I do. I have only to wait for him to show me the way. I love interacting with and seeing so many faithful people in this class. It truly warms my heart.

  7. Hi Karen,

I really appreciated where you said that "Jesus is there anyway". We just have to seek for him, because he likes to give us the choice while showing us both paths. As he loves us, he also wants us to be happy. I just have to boost you up on question 2, because it would be obvious to go to the dentist, and cannot tolerate his smile.
